Viktor Lofgren about the current web: "Much of the modern web is a fractal of dark patterns, it’s made for humans in the same sense a zoo or a meat packing plant is made for animals."

What is a computer for you in 2023? For me, it's still the 'personal computer' idea from the 90's. You own your data and you decide what software runs. Unfortunately these machines were so clunky, it's time to make the computer portable. It's also time to make the computer 'personal' again.

A lot of visitors after my blogpost got popular on Hacker News. Red plus yellow are the visits, which I had 17553 of. Only red are the unique visitors. The website system held pretty well under the load, with 2 visitors per second at it's peak hour. Also credit to the webhost!

via: InterconnectedI wish my web server were in the corner of my room
Back in college I used to run part of my website from a Linux box in my room. I made it into a speech synthesiser, and people could connect to the machine to talk into my flat. (Retrospective apologies to my flatmates.) This is way back in 2000 so before smartphones, and before texting, and before always-on internet (college was ...

In this fantastic video, Dan Olson looks at the grossest parts of the publishing industry; the exploitation, the predatory behavior, the high tolerance of spam by publishing companies, and how grifters push freelance writers and voice actors into a gig economy nightmare. Dan breaks down how these scams work—how they exploit peop ...

In business, moving is one of the hardest things to do.People think change is hard. It is. But moving is harder.Morphing from thinking and talking to actually doing and moving is the hardest. It's hard because talk is easy. Theorizing is easy. Imagining is easy. Waiting is easy. Second guessing yourself is easy. Third and fourth ...

A restaurant owner told me today that he stopped using Thuisbezorgd (app for home delivery of food here in NL). "A lot of revenue, but less profit. We use our own website again." After him stopping, another three restaurants stopped using Thuisbezorgd. Which emphasizes the local aspect of the restaurant industry.

"Websites are social constructs. There are only servers that speak this weird HTTP protocol and sometimes spit out a markup language called HTML if you're lucky. This HTML is then understood by either very principled humans or "web browsers" and then it all gets transformed into roughly what the writer or designer wants it to look ...

"The story of HTTP shows one thing rather clearly: what we know today as the internet is not a single thing. It is a suite of protocols and ideas that work together to facilitate the exchange of information, a suite of protocols that evolve and improve, often subtly and gradually."

via: David Heinemeier HanssonTurning the phone into a tool again
I've been keen to use my phone less for a long time. So on a recent holiday, I banished it completely for a week, while reading Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport. That felt great. But as Newport notes, it's easy to fall back into bad old habits, if all you do is a sabbatical from your phone. His book details a bunch of good rem ...

Since August 2012, Curiosity has been exploring 3-mile-high Mt. Sharp in Gale Crater. The rover has climbed more than 2,000 feet (612 meters), reaching progressively younger rocks that serve as a record on how Mars has evolved from a wet, habitable planet to a cold desert environment.
